About Aristides Morales:

Aristides is an 80 years old farmer, who has been producing coffee for more than 60 years. His farm, El Mirador is located in Anatoli village in the municipality of La Mesa.

His father owned a trapiche (a traditional press to mill sugar cane) to produce panela an also worked with coffee, his mother was a housewife. He has a family of 6, his wife and his 5 children live and work in Bogotá. So, unfortunately, Aristides is the only one who takes care of the farm. He also lives in Bogotá but visits the farm constantly. Seeing generational lines of coffee producers end is part of the reason we created the Neighbors & Crops program. To keep the youth interested in such a traditional Colombian practice: coffee cultivation.

Before joining the program he used to sell his coffee to the federation. He also experienced some difficulties related to labor, as in harvesting season he couldn’t find enough laborers to pick their coffee.

Aristides tells us that thanks to the program he is able to have more time and spend it with his family. support him with our own “cherry picking” squad, and the infrastructure and labor needed to process his coffee.

About the Bio-Innovation Process:
Through the Bio-Innovation process, La Palma & El Tucán honors the main principles of organic farming. They first capture and reproduce microorganisms found in their farm’s beautiful forests, to create their own fermentation substrate. Then, they mix this substrate with perfectly ripe cherries, in a clay pot for 100 hours. This combination allows them to create a sustainable closed cycle. After the fermentation, they remove the leftovers and reuse them as compost.

About the Neighbors and Corps Program:
By working collaboratively with more than 100 coffee-growing families located within a 10km radius of our farm, we buy and process exceptional coffee cherries while controlling every step of the process.
The program is designed to offer our neighboring coffee-growing families various different benefits (monetary and non-monetary) that help us incentivize them to become an active part of this industry and to revitalize the coffee-growing culture in our region
Together we can commit to the highest quality standards possible while focusing on innovative practices that protect our ecosystem, our land, our home. At the end of the day, we as farmers are the guardians of our own environment.
